Chocolate Mint

Though chocolate mint is named more for the color of its branches than for the flavor, there's enough of a hint to add a refreshing twist to chocolatey desserts.

Yummy!! Review by Neddy

I wrote earlier that I would try making mint chocolate chip ice cream. Just wanted to share that it was beyond delicious!

Mint chocolate chip/peppermint bon bon is one of my absolute favorites, and this surpassed any I have ever tasted. Even my husband said it may be the best ice cream he'd ever had.

I used author David Lebovitz's recipe that I found online. To gather the mint for the recipe, I brought a medium bowl of cool clean water down to my garden and rinsed mint in it as I snipped it (leaving a little of each stem with a few leaves). I then pulled and weighed the mint leaves in a separate bowl until I had 80 grams (the same as 2 cups packed). It takes a lot, so wait until you have enough , but it is a fantastic way to use up your mint.

It's been two weeks since I made it, and my mint plants are already looking pretty plush again. :) (Posted on 7/18/13)
Love this mint Review by Thora

I am a mint lover, who just loves it for it’s own sake. I have over 19 mint varieties. Chocolate Mint is my favorite. I bought a pot last year and made 9 smaller plants off of the runners last year. They are all doing great. This is a “wow!” mint that tastes and smells just like Andes after dinner mints. It has a nice height, grows quickly and has an interesting color. This is a good mint. Great choice Review by Neddy

I have had my chocolate mint for a few years now. I live in Minnesota (Zone 4), and have it near the back of the house where it gets plenty of Sun from the south. To constrain it, I found a gray 5-gallon bucket and had my husband cut out the bottom, so I just have the rim plus about 8 to 10". I then worked the bucket into the ground around my mint plant until about 3" of the rim still showed above ground. That way it keeps the plant from running underground and I can sweep my hand around the edge above to catch runners.

Every spring I take just a small bit of the plant (with roots) and stick it in a plastic pot that tapers out to be as wide as a plate (11") and is about 6" deep (it originally had mother's day annuals in it) using good miracle grow soil or something). In no time, that plant gets as big as the one on the ground and it looks beautiful! Even if you forget to water it, it still will look good (but do get back to watering it. :) I'm going to try making mint chocolate chip in just a day or so. Yum!!! (Posted on 7/3/13)
Great smelling plant Review by Patti

I have only recently purchased this plant and per my other experiences with mint, potted it. Any mint will wander and overtake a garden, so *POT* it. Don't isolate it in your garden, it will absolutely wander. A pot is the only way to ensure it won't get out of control.

It smells wonderful and does smell like girl scout cookies. I have not tasted it yet, but I am fond of rubbing the leaves and allowing its scent to waft about. I can't wait for it to get a bit bigger when I will begin harvesting leaves to freeze. Will make a great tea related gift for friends. (Posted on 4/29/13)
Runner Review by Peter

As it says in the description "Stems tend to run rampantly over—and under—soil". I would add that they run rampantly through cracks, around corners, over edging and anything else in its way. Be careful and keep a close eye on this one. I found it to have a mild minty flavor, tea with a "hint" of mint. (Posted on 4/18/13)

I was looking for a variety of mint I would like the best, and I found a small pot of Chocolate mint.(by Bonnie's plants) I mowed it down after a while, and it's grown back fast, and full. Definitely a recommended if you like chocolatey-mint! (Posted on 3/19/13)
