  • Fruit Size: 16 oz
  • Matures: 70 to 75 days
  • Plant Size: 5 to 8 feet

High yields of smooth skinned, large fruit earn Better Boy a spot as one of the most popular tomatoes grown in the US and as one of our all time best sellers. The fruit has excellent classic tomato flavor with just the right balance of acid and sugar. This is a great slicing tomato. It is widely adapted throughout the country. Grow it in a tall cage or tie to a stake for support. Space plants 24 to 36 inches apart.

The indeterminate vines are resistant to verticillium wilt (V), fusarium wilt (F), and nematodes (N).

Some Bonnie Plants varieties may not be available at your local stores, as we select and sell varieties best suited to the growing conditions in each region.

YEAR 2012 OK BUT YEAR 2013 BETTER Review by Sylvester017

Had Better Boy last year but had many setbacks in weather--rain, cloudy days, then summer humidity. This spring I got a taller sturdier seedling and in LESS than 2 months it grew excessive vines and lots of full-sized fruit is already waiting to get a little pink when I prefer to pick them and ripen in the house on my counter. BB vines grow so rapidly that I have to sucker and cut off extra vines every week or the one plant will quickly monopolize the garden bed. It is doing better than Mortgage Lifter this spring as there is no fruit on ML yet. I only plant heirloom tomatoes but BB is one hybrid I make an exception for because it gives such pretty round fruit even though the taste is average IMO. This is a much better year for BB in my garden and the weather has been very cooperative so far. Use OMRI organic tomato fertilizers for greater fruit yields and spray the blossoms with apple juice to keep the blossoms from dropping off. (Posted on May 7, 2013)

Big variable Tomato Review by riceke

Sometimes you get a lot of big tomatoes and sometimes it is a low producer. I think it is highly dependent on the weather. I used to plant this every year but have gone to more consistent varieties. But if you have a good season you will get a bumper crop (Posted on January 10, 2013)

Not As Good As Other Tomato Breeds Review by Sylvester017

Good producer but yielded less than Mortgage Lifter. We had a lousy growing season. A sunless rainy planting season, then a humid heatwave, then a wet harvesting season so all my crop did poorly. Will start a seedling next year and give BB another chance. The taste is ordinary but BB gave me a decent amount of fruit up until the 4-weeks heat wave that messed up our fruiting vines. After the heatwave, Mortgage Lifter kept giving fruit whereas BB pooped out. Next year I'll mineralize and fertilize heavier to see if that helps. (Posted on November 9, 2012)
