Heirloom. For quality that has stood the test of time, German Johnson stands tall€ — literally. These big, pink-red tomatoes are borne on robust plants that can fill a tomato cage and drape back down again. Give them at least 3 feet between plants and then pick the flavorful sandwich-sized slicers as they ripen. The number of tomatoes may be less than other varieties, but the ones you bring to the table will be worthy of their space in the garden. In our Alabama test garden, where conditions are ideal and the season is long, we harvested an average of 40 fruits per plant. German Johnson calls North Carolina home, so it is suited to life in humidity. This one is a favorite at farmers’ markets in the Carolinas in the summer when the local crops come in. Be sure to stake strongly or cage.

Some Bonnie Plants varieties may not be available in your local area, due to different variables in certain regions. Also, if any variety is a limited, regional variety it will be noted on the pertinent variety page.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great size and taste, though lower volume. Sorry I only bought 1 of these at the Depot for home stuff. I'm in Southeastern NC and this has grown vigorously. Though only about a half dozen fruit so far they are good size and the plant is still growing so hoping a few more set before the heat of summer kills everything. I will be saving seeds and probably purchase again for next year! This is what I think of when I think of red beefsteak heirloom tomatoes! I will give up the lower volume for the larger tastier fruit!!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Heirloom I usually don't grow heirlooms, but tried this one a few years ago. I really like the flavor, and the plants are very hardy.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from My first time German Johnson: The plant grew very large, but not one tomato made it to the table. The large blossoms looked great, but would drop off, this was due to enviromental stress (not enough water). Garden soil was mix in with the Eastern North Carolina sandy soil here before planting and I thought watering every two to three days was enough, but it wasn't. Watering everyday fixed the problem of blossom drop and from there the fruit just didn't turn out very well, they grew large, but split real bad and insects had a field day with that. I love Bonnie plants and all of the problems were probably my fault. I might try it again sometime now that what I know about the plant and see how it goes.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from tomato: I did get a few tomatoes off the plant that took over my whole spot I planted it at, I got maybe 6 or 8 tomato off of it then I had tons of little yellow flowers with tiny tomato which never matured before they got rot.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome tomato!: We planted 4 different varieties this year. All did fantastic. This one produced so many tomatoes we are totally overwhelmed. But what a wonderful thing to be overwhelmed with! I'm not sure why some people didn't get very many. We started ours in March, put outside early June, and were eating beginning of July. Still harvesting tons of them now late September.... Will definitely do again.
