Pansies are a traditional favorite, beloved for their pretty blooms that brighten cool-weather landscapes. They also work well in window boxes and containers, where one can appreciate the pretty blossoms up close. For best growth and flowers, plant in moist, fertile, well-drained soil. Pansies like cool temperatures, but today’s hybrids are more heat tolerant than ever, often lasting into summer in the North. This is an ideal fall flower in the South and mild climates of the West. In cooler climates, mulch to prolong bloom into summer and remove the faded flowers. Cut the stems at their base to use in tiny vases indoors. Pansy flowers are also edible if you don’t use pesticides. Add them as surprise decoration atop a cupcake or salad.
