Chocolate Mint

Though chocolate mint is named more for the color of its branches than for the flavor, there's enough of a hint to add a refreshing twist to chocolatey desserts.

Chocolate Mint

  • Type: perennial zones 3 to 11
  • Planting time: after last frost in spring or in fall (up to 2 to 3 weeks before first frost in cold zones)
  • Features: green leaves with strong menthol flavor
  • Height: 12 to 18 inches
  • Light: full sun to part shade
  • Soil: fertile, moist
  • Spacing: 18 to 24 inches
  • Plant Size: 12 to 18 inches tall, 18 to 24 inches wide
  • Garden use: herb gardens, beside water gardens, or in containers
  • Culinary use: use leaves fresh, dried, or frozen in water

Chocolate mint leaves have a delightful minty chocolate flavor, much like the classic Girl Scout cookie. Stems tend to run rampantly over—and under—soil. In small garden spaces, it’s best to tuck chocolate mint into a pot to curtail its wandering ways. Chocolate mint thrives alongside water gardens or in damp spots in the yard. Lushest growth occurs in moist soil in partial shade. Crush fresh leaves into water for a refreshing beverage, or add to tea or coffee. You can also dry leaves for flavoring desserts, like ice cream, meringues, quick breads, or cakes. Pick leaves frequently. Plants open lavender blooms in late summer.

Some Bonnie Plants varieties may not be available at your local stores, as we select and sell varieties best suited to the growing conditions in each region.

Great smelling plant Review by Patti

I have only recently purchased this plant and per my other experiences with mint, potted it. Any mint will wander and overtake a garden, so *POT* it. Don't isolate it in your garden, it will absolutely wander. A pot is the only way to ensure it won't get out of control.

It smells wonderful and does smell like girl scout cookies. I have not tasted it yet, but I am fond of rubbing the leaves and allowing its scent to waft about. I can't wait for it to get a bit bigger when I will begin harvesting leaves to freeze. Will make a great tea related gift for friends. (Posted on April 29, 2013)

Runner Review by Peter

As it says in the description "Stems tend to run rampantly over—and under—soil". I would add that they run rampantly through cracks, around corners, over edging and anything else in its way. Be careful and keep a close eye on this one. I found it to have a mild minty flavor, tea with a "hint" of mint. (Posted on April 18, 2013)

I was looking for a variety of mint I would like the best, and I found a small pot of Chocolate mint.(by Bonnie's plants) I mowed it down after a while, and it's grown back fast, and full. Definitely a recommended if you like chocolatey-mint! (Posted on March 19, 2013)
