Let Cucumbers Climb

Instead of letting vines trail along the ground, let your cucumbers climb. Trellised cucumbers are easier to pick and less susceptible to disease.

Use a trellis to grow cucumbers in a small garden space.

Cucumbers do best if they can climb instead of spread over the ground. The tendrils of the vines will grab fences, string, wire trellis, or tall cages so that the vines climb the structures. This makes for better air circulation (important to prevent diseases), keeps the fruit clean, and makes the tasty cukes easier for you to spot because they hang. Plants take up a lot less space this way, too. So let your cucumbers climb. They'll thank you.

In addition to making a circular cage from fence wire, you can build a tent trellis for your cukes using a fence panel. See the how-to steps here.
