Buttercrunch Lettuce
Buttercrunch is a Bibb type whose prized shape and buttery, chewy leaves have become a favorite for salads.

Buttercrunch Lettuce

  • Light: Full sun to part shade
  • Head size: 6 to 8 inches (semi-heading)
  • Matures: 21 days for leaves, 55 for head
  • Plant spacing: 8 to 10 inches apart

Developed by Cornell University, this heat-tolerant, Bibb-type lettuce has quickly become a favorite since earning All America status in 1963. Its rich green leaves, sometimes tinged with red, form a beautiful rosette in the garden that holds well under stress and has good bolt resistance. A good source of vitamin A and phytonutrients. Grows best in full sun, but will tolerate partial shade and even appreciates it in spring in hot climates.

Some Bonnie PlantsĀ® varieties may not be available in your local area, due to different variables in certain regions. Also, if any variety is a limited, regional variety it will be noted on the pertinent variety page.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Bolted way too soon: Live in Sarasota,FL. Purchased a set (9 plants) from Lowe's. Potted them on Oct. 8th. Kept 7, gave 2 to neighbor. Are in stackable pots (3 potting spaces per pot - total 21 spaces) with Romaine(3), Simpson Lettuce(3), Bok Choy(2), Cilantro(2), Tarragon(1) and Swiss Chard(2) all of these are doing fine. Used Miracle-Gro potting soil. The Buttercrunch leaves all have become "thorny" along the rib and edges, harvested a few unimpressive (i.e., not tasty) leaves in Nov. but 5 plants have bolted now and other 2 look like they are getting ready to bolt. This is the first time I've had a problem with Bonnie Plants. (I don't count losing plants to bugs, in FL, as a Bonnie Plant failure.) Don't understand why the Romaine is fine - I've had that bolt in previous years. Weather had been in the 70's until last week when reached the low 80s. (Lows were between 50-64 degrees F.)

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Didn't work for me: I bought 8 plants as they looked better then what I wanted to buy. All I have seen are straggly leaves that seem to be bolting. I am sure they don't do as well in containers as said in my case anyway. I will just have to enjoy my tomatoes instead this year.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My favorite lettuce. The bolting issues are real for all lettuces, but this one is slow to bolt, more likely to head. The only one that I have seen to resist the hotter temps better is 'Jerico.'

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love this lettuce! It is a wonderful producer but if you live in the desert SW, as I do (Las Cruces) you need to plant in either August/September or January/February for harvest. I support & champion straw bale gardening (provided gardeners purchase "harvested" bales) .This species grows well in straw bale gardens during the offseason (August-March) in my neck of the woods that is the Chihuahuan desert, north. The wonderful thing about this lettuce is its flavor: meaty and approachable by everyone! If there is one lettuce to choose from, choose this one to grow. You won't be sorry.
