Red Sails Lettuce
This stunning red lettuce lends color, a light texture, and distinctive flavor to salads. The slightly ruffled leaves make a beautiful garnish, too.

Red Leaf Lettuce

  • Light: Full sun to part shade
  • Head size: 8 to 12 inches (loose-leaf type)
  • Matures: 21 days for leaves, 45 for head
  • Plant spacing: 10 to 15 inches apart

This beautiful lettuce offers a large, open “head” of loose leaves that deepens in color as it matures. It is fast growing, heat tolerant, and slow to bolt. Very high in nutrition. Grows best in full sun, but will tolerate partial shade and even appreciates it in spring in hot climates. The red color is best in full sun and cool weather.

Some Bonnie Plants varieties may not be available in your local area, due to different variables in certain regions. Also, if any variety is a limited, regional variety it will be noted on the pertinent variety page.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Recipe of a life time!!! True Italians do not give out this salad recipe much.....at all, but the health benefits and taste are better than pure gold. It's a bit expensive with the right ingreadents, but mouth watering good. We also . eat this salad at the END of the meal% not the start. You will need: 1 bottle of the best extra virgin olive oil from italy, about 23 to 25 dollars a bottle. 1 large or 2 small heads of fresh Red Leaf lettuce. 1 organic cucumber (fresh small pickling cucumbers taste the best In season) 2 large vine ripened, and, juicy beef steak tomatoes. 3 Meyers lemons (the sweet ones) these are a MUST, but if not available use 2 organic ones. Cut up cucumbers and tomatoes to bite size, cut or tear up lettuce into bowl, add cucumbers and tomatoes, mix well with lots of olive oil and lemon juice, and sea salt (non iodized) this is very simple, but a fringing fantastic taste and flavor with all the juices over the ingredients. Red Leaf lettuce is the best because it has the best taste and is the most tender of all the lettuce. (Great for people with crones disease or intestinal problems!) Sweet Meyer lemons are the best for juice flavor, and extra virgin olive oil is the best tasting....period. also VERY GOOD for the body. Enjoy my friends, and have at least 3 times a week.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I grew "red sails" in fall 20013 through spring 2014. It is a beautiful variety with full, abundant leaves. I have been looking for it for the last 2 years but haven't found it in the San Diego, CA area.
