Beefsteak Red Tomato (2 Pack)

Beefsteaks are always grown for their flavor and size for slicing and summer sandwiches. This variety produces large, meaty red fruit over a long season on indeterminate plants. Because it matures late compared to many other tomatoes, it will provide a fresh harvest in the latter part of the season. This is an old favorite beloved by gardeners in the Northeast and grown throughout the country. Vigorous vines grow best in tall cages. Resistant to fusarium wilt (F) and nematodes (N).

Big Beef Tomato (2 Pack)

For years gardeners wanted a large, beefsteak-type tomato that was delicious, early to bear, and highly disease resistant. Finally in 1994 those wishes came true with Big Beef. The large fruit has old-time tomato flavor and the vines are resistant to many of the problems that can discourage gardeners. The fruit is borne on vigorous, indeterminate vines from summer until frost. Compared to other beefsteak types, Big Beef is early and will set fruit reliably even in cool, wet weather. We harvest dozens of tomatoes from each plant in our Alabama test garden, where the harvest season lasts two full months and the growing conditions are very good. It grows well throughout the country, earning it an All America Selections designation in 1994; it has since grown to be a national favorite. Bonnie Original Tomato (2 Pack)

Bonnie Original hybrid was developed especially for us decades ago and continues to be a favorite. It has earned a reputation for exceptional flavor and high yields throughout the growing season. The medium-sized slicing tomatoes are great for sandwiches, hors d'oeuvres, and salads. Indeterminate vines yield smooth, uniform fruit through the summer until frost. This is the one that Bonnie employees grow at home.Resistant to verticillium wilt (V), fusarium wilt (F), and nematodes (N).

Cayenne Pepper (2 Pack)

Light: Full sun. Fruit size: 5 to 6 inches. Matures: 70 to 75 days. Plant spacing: 12 to 18 inches apart. Plant size: 18 to 24 inches tall. Scoville heat units: 30,000 to 50,000 (hot). This very hot pepper is the prime ingredient in Cayenne pepper, which is made when the dried peppers are ground into powder. This is also the favored spice of Creole and Cajun cuisine used to give gumbo and crayfish dishes their punch. Thin-walled, skinny, wrinkled fruits are 5 to 6 Inches long and very hot. However, they will not be hot when small. Wait until they get at least 5 or 6 Inches long to pick hot ones. They can be substituted for most dishes calling for Serrano, Jalapeno, or Habanero peppers. Easy to grow and tolerant of hot, humid weather, Cayenne will produce peppers all summer. These skinny peppers are also called chili or finger peppers. Great for containers. Early Girl Tomato (2 Pack)

When gardeners talk about the "first" tomatoes, Early Girl is always there. This may be the most all-round popular hybrid to satisfy that itch for the first fresh tomato of the season. Use them for slicing on a place, into a salad, or on a sandwich. This a proven all-round early hybrid. Use it to jump start your harvest. Early Girl bears lots of fruit for early harvest, but because the vines are indeterminate, they continue producing through summer. In our Alabama test garden, where conditions are ideal and the growing season is long, we harvest an average of 300 tomatoes from each Early Girl plant! Many gardeners plant it again late in the summer so that it will produce a huge fresh crop of "fall tomatoes" quickly before frost.Resistant to verticillium wilt (V) and fusarium wilt races 1 and 2 (F).

Poblano (Ancho) Pepper (2 Pack)

Mexico's favorite chile pepper! When traditionally ripened to red and dried, this pepper is known as an 'Ancho'; it is also used green, as a 'Poblano', for making chiles rellenos. The thick-walled, mildly hot fruit have a rich, mellow flavor. The name Poblano comes from the valley of Puebla, south of Mexico City, where the peppers were first cultivated. This pepper produces continuously through the summer in climates with warm days and cool nights. This is a big plant, so give it the space it needs when planting: Set it at least 3 to 4 feet from other plants.Organic varieties are only available at retailers.

Serrano Pepper (2 Pack)

This variety is a vigorous bearer of hot, pungent, candle-shaped fruits that mature from green to bright red. Plants do well in most climates and are especially well adapted to hot, humid areas. This pepper is growing in popularity for pickling and salsa, and is the pepper of choice for making pico de gallo.Organic varieties are only available at retailers.

Spinach (2 Pack)

This variety of dark green spinach has been a standout in many regions, including the North. It is slow to bolt and suitable for spring, summer, and fall planting. The full, upright plants produce high yields of large, triangular leaves that are rich in the phytonutrient lutein. Both frost and heat tolerant.

Buttercrunch Lettuce (2 Pack)

Developed by Cornell University, this heat-tolerant, Bibb-type lettuce has quickly become a favorite since earning All America status in 1963. Its rich green leaves, sometimes tinged with red, form a beautiful rosette in the garden that holds well under stress and has good bolt resistance. A good source of vitamin A and phytonutrients. Grows best in full sun, but will tolerate partial shade and even appreciates it in spring in hot climates.

Green Romaine Lettuce (2 Pack)

This is the classic romaine. Its compact, dark green rosette of tall, upright leaves is slightly curly with white hearts and has a crisp, sweet flavor. Slow to bolt. Grows best in full sun, but will tolerate partial shade and even appreciates it in spring in hot climates. Organic varieties are only available at retailers.

Lacinato Kale

Heirloom. Good looks and great taste combine in Lacinato kale, which makes a striking addition to any garden setting. Dark blue-green to black leaves often have a heavily crinkled texture, which inspires one of its many common names, dinosaur kale. The flattened leaves are perfect for making kale chips. This kale dates to 18th-century Italy, which is why it's also called Tuscan kale. Thomas Jefferson grew it in his garden at Monticello. Kale is a super food, and Lacinato leaves extend excellent health benefits, lowering cholesterol, fighting cancer, and decreasing inflammation. Prepare leaves steamed, sautéed, or roasted. Kale is a classic fall flavor and combines nicely with garlic, peppers, chickpeas, sausage, squash, and apples. A cold-hardy vegetable, kale leaves sweeten after frost. In northern regions, leave a few plants in the garden to harvest after the snow flies.

Lieutenant Broccoli (2 Pack)

Well adapted to warm weather, these plants form smooth, dark green heads on medium-sized stems with few side shoots. Heads offer classic flavor and all the vitamins and protein broccoli is known for. Banana Hot Pepper (2 Pack)

If you like a hint of heat with your peppers, give hot banana pepper a try. The 6-inch-long, banana-shaped fruit provides a bit of a kick—without frightening less-adventurous eaters. Pickled, fried, or roasted, it adds terrific flavor to your favorite dishes. The name, Big Boy, is easy to remember and so is the flavor. This is a big, sandwich-type slicer with smooth, bright red fruit and a flavor that everybody likes. It bears heavily in mid-season, yet the indeterminate vines continue fruiting (though not as heavily) until frost. Plants in our Alabama test garden, where conditions are excellent, have yielded 100 tomatoes each through a 10-week harvest season. Long vines need staking, or grow the plant in a tall cage. Husky Red Cherry Tomato (2 Pack)

This super sweet cherry tomato is a best seller because of its flavor, productivity, and good looks. If you like to snack on cherry tomatoes, this is a great choice. One of the popular "Husky" series developed especially for home gardens, the plant is stout, dark green and really pretty; it's one of the prettiest tomato plants that we grow. The vines are dwarf indeterminate, making them short and husky like a determinate type, usually between 3 and 4 feet, yielding clusters of tasty little cherry tomatoes in a small space over a long period of time. Jalapeno Hot Pepper (2 Pack)

Named for the town of Jalapa, Mexico, this is the most popular chile pepper in the United States. Jalapeño produces 3-inch, thick-walled, moderately hot pods with deep green color that matures to a bright red. The skin may show a netting pattern as fruit ages, but it does not affect flavor. Often, the heat of the peppers will vary, even those from the same plant. If peppers grow fast, get plenty of water, and are harvested soon, they may be milder than peppers that stay on the plant a long time, or that develop slowly and under stressful conditions. Widely adapted, jalapeño plants yield a bountiful harvest in dry or humid, hot or cool climates. The compact plants grow well in containers. Black Beauty Eggplant (2 Pack)

Blue Lake Bush Bean

Heirloom. This stringless snap bean matures early and offers superior flavor, color, texture and ease of picking. A bush variety, it does not need staking. The beans are long and straight. Excellent steamed or used in salads. Originally developed as a canning bean, but it soon grew to be a fresh favorite, too. Its predecessor, Blue Lake pole bean, is also an heirloom and has been around since the early 1900s. Blue Lake Bush was developed from Blue Lake pole bean in 1961. Very productive. Resists bean mosaic virus. Produces most of its harvest within a few weeks, leaving time for a second crop or a vacation!

Boston Pickling Cucumber

Heirloom. A favorite of gardeners for high yields of short cukes with solid flesh. Cucumbers are thin-skinned, straight with full ends, and a nice green color. Vines bear continuously. Flesh is crisp and very receptive to pickling spices. Great for any pickling recipe, whether sweets or dills. May be harvested at sizes from 3 to 7 inches, depending on your pickling needs. Plants resist scab and are tolerant to cucumber mosaic.

Burpless Bush Hybrid Cucumber

This is a space-saving form of the favorite Burpless Hybrid. Short vines grow about 2 feet long — long enough to trellis if desired. Fruit is straight and cylindrical for easy slicing. Eat these delicious cukes fresh, pickled, or sliced into salads. Excellent for small gardens and containers.

Burpless Hybrid Cucumber

The mildest cucumber on the market, this early variety produces 10-inch long slicing cucumbers that are completely burpless, with no bitterness. Excellent sliced, but also fine for pickling when picked at a slightly smaller size. High yielding. This vining cucumber will appreciate growing up on a trellis.

Cucumber Cooler

Enjoy the fresh, crisp taste of cucumbers—even without a big garden! With shorter vines and a more compact habit than typical varieties, Cucumber Cooler grows beautifully when planted in a container on a sunny patio or deck, or in a raised bed. Japanese Cucumber

A favorite in Japan for its long, slender, dark green fruit that is mild and has few seeds. If you don't eat it all at once, wrap the unused portion tightly in plastic wrap to prevent dehydration in the refrigerator. To save space, give the vigorous plants a fence to climb.

Lemon Cucumber

Heirloom. Round and yellow, this tennis ball-sized cucumber is a perfect serving for one or two people. It is believed to have been introduced to the US in the late 1800s. Lemon cucumber does not have a lemon taste, only color, but has a thin, tender skin with a flavor a little milder than a regular cucumber's. One great advantage to this cuke is that you can eat it all at one sitting with no half-cuke left to store in the fridge. Prolific plants are easy to grow and seem to need less heat to ripen than some cucumbers, making this a good choice for cooler climates. It is also less apt to develop bitterness. This is the cucumber often seen in ethnic Indian markets (budamkaya). To save space, give the vigorous plants a fence to climb. Try hollowing out the cukes for a cold soup summer appetizer. Orange Snacking Pepper

Fill your garden with a healthy snack for lunchtime and beyond. These sweet orange snacking peppers serve both loads of crunch and lots of beta-carotene and vitamin C. They’re ideal for eating straight off the plant, chopped fresh in salads, or sliced thin for stir-fries. Plants tend to give high yields, so consider staking with a tomato cage when planting in a windy location, to keep stems from breaking. Lunchbox Sweet Snacking Pepper plants work beautifully in containers; plant one per 18-inch pot. Underplant with dwarf marigolds for a pretty combination.

Peaches & Cream Corn

Hybrid. As sweet and delicious as the name implies, each ear of Peaches ; Cream Corn boasts a combination of tender white and yellow kernels. Plants mature early; consider multiple plantings one to two weeks apart to keep the harvest coming. Space plants 12 inches apart in rows 2 feet apart with a minimum of 4 rows for good pollination.

Red Hot Chili Pepper

The semi-compact plant produces brilliant clusters of upward-facing, cone-shaped chili peppers that begin pale green, turn vibrant orange, and then mature to fiery red. Snacking Red Pepper (2 Pack)

Talk about goodness from the garden! These deliciously sweet, snack-size red peppers taste so good right off the plant that they might never see the inside of your kitchen. Kids love them for snacks and lunches, and they also taste great in salads and stir-fries. Fruits tend to be slightly smaller than Lunchbox Orange. Great for containers; plant each one in an 18-inch pot. Stake mature plants or surround with a small tomato cage to provide support.

Super Sweet 100 Tomato (2 Pack)

When Sweet 100 tomato was first introduced it created a buzz among gardeners because it is so tasty and produces for such a long time. Now, its improved cousin, Super Sweet 100 hybrid, bears the same long, branched clusters of deliciously sweet tomatoes high in sugar and vitamin C. But Super Sweet 100 is known to be more disease resistant, giving plants a better chance where certain problems may be soil-borne. You'll be eating them right off the vine before they ever make it to the salad bowl! They are perfect for snacking, salads, and even juice. Super Sweet 100 lives up to its name, especially when harvested at the peak of ripeness. The indeterminate vines continue bearing until frost. Asparagus

Asparagus demands its own bed in the garden because it lives for years. Once the plants are established, the bed will produce every year for 15 years or more. Plant asparagus seedlings in early spring. Our containers typically have several seedlings that you will need to gently tease apart to plant at the proper spacing. Apply a thick layer of mulch at planting time and always pay close attention to weed control, as asparagus hates any competitor. Avoid using straw mulch because of the seed that it often carries (wheat, rye, or other grain that it comes from). Although an asparagus bed rewards you for years, you'll need patience to wait on the first harvest, which doesn't come until the second spring. The first spring that you plant, leave the plants alone to grow into tall ferns (4-5 feet high). This builds strong roots that send out the asparagus shoots the next spring. Even though the asparagus harvest comes in spring, remember to mulch, water, and weed the bed throughout the growing season to ensure an even better crop next year. Asparagus is high in vitamins C and K.

Bonnie Hybrid Cabbage

Bonnie's best cabbage. Grows large, round, blue-green heads. Well suited to the South as a spring and fall cabbage. It also performs well in the North as a summer cabbage. Resistant to Fusarium yellows and tolerant of black rot.

Celery

This crunchy staple tastes best when harvested fresh from the garden. Early maturing stalks are crisp and flavorful. Plants grow well in most regions of the country, but no matter where you grow them, be sure to water regularly for best results. When harvesting, cut the outside stalks first. If stalks begin to sprawl as they grow, tie them together loosely with garden twine. Both stalks and leaves are edible; eat them raw, or use them in stir-fries, soups, and casseroles.

Clemson Spineless Green Okra

Heirloom. High yields of spineless, tender ribbed pods with excellent flavor. Traditional favorite for soups and stews. Can be canned, fried, roasted or boiled. Harvest pods when 3 Inches Long. Pods get much bigger, but small pods are more tender. Plants just keep growing until cool weather in the fall, so they will get 6 feet or taller in areas with a long, warm growing season.

Curly Kale (2 Pack)

This pretty blue-green hybrid kale is easy to grow and will keep you supplied for months. Vigorous producer, with leaves growing lushly on compact plants. Cut outer leaves so that center can continue growing. Light frost makes the leaves taste sweeter. Organic varieties are only available at retailers.

Early Jersey Wakefield Cabbage

Heirloom. This American cabbage is a favorite for early harvest, forming a conical, pointed, dark green head with a smooth, sweet flavor. The head is slow to split and slow to bolt. Holds in the garden for 2 to 3 weeks after maturity. Rich in vitamins and minerals. Some gardeners consider this the best tasting of all cabbages.

Golden Cross 45-day Cabbage

This is our favorite "mini-cabbage." It matures extra early with tight, softball-sized, round heads. The small plants allow closer spacing in the garden or for growing in containers.

Gourmet Salad Mix

Here's the perfect baby lettuce mix- no grocery bags required. A blend of red, light green, and dark green lettuce leaves (both smooth and ruffled) grow together in this pretty salad combo. Lettuce grows best in full sun, but will tolerate partial shade and even appreciates shade in spring in hot climates. Plant in the ground, in raised beds, or in containers.

Green Fingers Okra

Perfect for containers, this plant is compact, topping out at about 3 feet tall. Pods are tender and spineless, so you can harvest without worrying about irritating your hands. Green Fingers needs lots of sun and warmth, and produces well in the heat. Use pods for gumbo or pickling, slice them for frying or boiling, or roast them whole with some olive oil, salt, and pepper.

Green Magic Broccoli (2 Pack)

Enjoy beautiful, smooth, medium-sized heads of blue-green broccoli. Plants are compact and grow quite well in containers. Don’t pull them once you’ve harvested the head, though, as plants will continue to produce lots of side shoots that are just right for snacking or sautéing. This variety has excellent heat tolerance, too. Plant in late summer for a fall harvest.

Head Lettuce (Iceberg Type)

This is the standard crisp-head variety with large solid hearts and very crisp, tasty leaves. In warmer parts of the country, it may not form the tight heads that it does in California (where most head lettuce is commercially grown), but the looser heads that do form are delicious and distinctly Iceberg nonetheless. If you live in an area in which the temperature gets hot fast in the spring, harvest the heads early and enjoy. Rich in vitamin A.

Organic Broccoli

Belstar has medium-sized blue-green heads with tightly spaced, medium-sized “beads" and numerous side shoots. Plants are hearty, and adapt well to many regions. Growth is compact, making Belstar great for containers. This variety only available during peak planting season in Arizona, California, New Jersey, Oregon, Virginia, and Washington. Organic varieties are only available at retailers.

Red Cabbage

Red cabbage is a beautiful form of one of the oldest-known vegetables. Flavor is like that of green cabbage. Excellent boiled or stir-fried. Add red cabbage for color in salads and other dishes, but be aware that the color turns a faded purple as the cabbage is cooked.

White Hybrid Cauliflower

Inner leaves wrap to protect the deep, white curds. Produces heavy yields. Try raw with dips or broken into salads. More resistant to cold than many cauliflower varieties. Rich in vitamin C.

Ace 55 Heirloom Tomato

Heirloom. Large, deep red fruit with low acid content--one of the few red tomatoes to be able to make that claim. Crack-resistant. Heavy foliage shades fruit to protect from it sunburn. Plant is not overly tall, but still benefits from staking. Good for containers. This tried and true variety is resistant to verticillium wilt (V), fusarium wilt (F), and alternaria stem canker (ASC). Some Bonnie Plants varieties may not be available in your local area, due to different variables in certain regions. Apocalypse Red Pepper (2 Pack)

Amelia Tomato

A great garden tomato, this variety is especially popular in Texas, where it made its debut at the 2004 and 2005 San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo. Amelia is a hybrid with outstanding disease resistance and resistance to cracking. High-yielding vines bear tomatoes prized for their flavor. Because it makes a nice, neat plant, Amelia is cooperative in containers, too. One of the few tomatoes resistant to spotted wilt virus, it is popular not only in Texas, but throughout the Southeast. These big tomatoes are the size expected from a home garden. Amelia produces a lot of tomatoes (20 to 30 pounds per plant) over about a month's harvest time in our Alabama test garden, where the growing conditions are excellent. Resistant to verticillium wilt (V and V1), fusarium wilt races 1, 2, and 3 (F1, 2, 3), nematodes (N), stemphyllium (ST), and tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV). Anaheim Hot Pepper

Also called a New Mexico or California chile, this is a green, chile-type, mildly hot pepper that ripens to a pretty deep red. The thick-walled fruit is the classic pepper used for chiles rellenos, soups, and stews. Rich, mellow flavor. Plants are disease resistant. Plants bear continously through summer where nighttime temperatures aren't higher than 90 degrees. This is also the variety that has been most widely grown and dried to make ristras, or string of dried Chile peppers, that are a New Mexico tradition. Originating as a practical way for farmers to cure peppers to keep a long time, the pretty strings of dozens of dried red peppers have taken on ornamental value as well.

Arkansas Traveler Heirloom Tomato

Try this heirloom slicer tomato Originating before 1900 in the Ozark Mountains, Arkansas Traveler is prized for very flavorful, medium-sized tomatoes that resist cracking and keep on coming, even in drought and hot weather. Taste is mild, like the pink color of the fruit. Popular in its home state and beyond. Indeterminate vines do best in tall cages. Black Beauty Zucchini

Heirloom. A 1957 All-America Selections winner, this early and prolific heirloom variety has been exceedingly popular for its very dark green skin and creamy white flesh. You know what they say about zucchini, "plant it and stand back." The fast-growing plants are very easy to grow and will continue to produce abundantly through summer if kept picked. Use in soups, salads, and casseroles. Great sliced thin for dips, battered and fried, or in veggie lasagna. Freezes well. Harvest while skins are still tender; pick really small for "baby zucchini."

Better Bush Tomato

This is a great choice that bears sizeable fruits on a very compact plant that works well in containers and small gardens. Especially strong, bushy plants bear truly tasty, medium-sized tomatoes great for sandwiches and slicing. The heavy foliage of this hybrid helps protect tomatoes from sunburn. In our Alabama test garden where the growing season is long and the soil is ideal, plants produce from 90 to 120 tomatoes each over a two-month harvest period. Keep the big harvest going with successive, monthly plantings through July for a fall harvest. Plants are strong and upright, but will still do best in a small cage or on a stake for support. Resistant to verticillium wilt (V), fusarium wilt (F), and nematodes (N). Organic varieties are only available at retailers.

Big Bertha Bell Pepper

The largest elongated bell pepper available! Thick-walled, 7-inch long fruit ripen to red. Plants are disease resistant. Ideal for giant stuffed peppers. Big Bertha plants in our Alabama test garden produce 7 to 12 pounds of peppers each over a harvest season that runs from May through October. Obviously, your results will depend on care and the length of the warm season in your locale. This is a big plant, so use a tomato cage or stakes to support because when the stems get heavy with big fruit, they can break in wind or rain.

Black Cherry Tomato

This truly black cherry tomato was bred in Florida by the late Vince Sapp. Pick loads of these perfectly round, dark fruits with rich, sweet, dynamic flavor from just one plant. Great for shish-kebabs, salads (they're striking!), or just eating in the garden. Vines are quite vigorous, so use a tall cage. Open-pollinated.

Black Prince Heirloom Tomato

Heirloom. Admittedly, it is difficult to imagine growing tomatoes in Siberia, but this delicious heirloom hails from that very region. This is a fairly early tomato, and one that is more apt to set fruit in cool climates. The small, dark-red, slightly pear-shaped fruits begin maturing a little more than 2 months after planting, no matter where you live. Black Prince has been a very productive heirloom in our test garden, yielding from 25 to 40 pounds of tomatoes per plant over a 3-month harvest season. The flavor is worthy of a chef's table! Bush Early Girl Tomato

This hybrid is a relative of the well-known standard-sized Early Girl yet produces more tomatoes than many other compact varieties. The determinate vines form strong bushes perfect for containers. Bush Early Girl bears a surprising number of delicious tomatoes in a small garden or a pot. In our Alabama test garden, where growing conditions are ideal and the season is long, we average 100 tomatoes or more from each plant. Butternut Squash

Heirloom. This variety, Waltham Butternut, has a hard, yellow to tan exterior but delicious sweet, orange flesh inside. Exceptional quality, no stringiness. This long-lasting squash stores all winter. Try it steamed, boiled or baked. Extremely rich in vitamin A. This is the most common winter squash used to make the popular, creamy soup by the same name, and it is a popular baking squash. A 1970 All-America Selections winner.

Cajun Belle Pepper

True to its name, Cajun Belle pepper is an awesome pepper because it gives you all the flavor of a sweet pepper combined with a mild but spicy heat that adds zip to any dish. This 2010 All America winner is just plain cute, too. We love the way the little peppers ripen from lime green to orange to red. You can eat them at any stage, but the longer they stay on the plant, the warmer they get. Plants are robust and disease tolerant yet relatively small, growing about 2 feet tall by 2 feet wide. They're ideal for small gardens or containers. Each fruit is 2 to 3 Inches Long, with 3 to 4 lobes to make a small, thin walled blocky miniature pepper. Allowed to remain on the plant to maturity, they turn glossy red and grow increasingly flavorful. Plants in our Alabama test garden (where the long harvest season lasts from May through October) easily yield more than 150 peppers each. Of course, yield in your garden will depend on care and the length of your warm growing season.

Demand for the Carolina Reaper plant has been as smokin' hot as the pepper itself! Do you dare to grow the world’s hottest pepper? Get your milk-chaser ready, because Carolina Reaper packs a punch! With an off-the-chart Scoville rating of 1,569,300, these devilish red fruits aren’t for wimps. Easy to grow, the infamous pepper possesses a fruity and sweet aroma, with an undertone of chocolate and cherry flavors. It may be hot, but it’s packed with flavor, too. A gorgeous dusky purple beefsteak with rich, complex flavor, this hybrid is a cross between two heirloom taste-test winners, Cherokee Purple and Carbon. Makes one of the most delicious tomato sandwiches you’ll ever taste! Cherokee Carbon tends to produce more fruit than either of its parents. Plants can get pretty tall, so be sure to support them with strong stakes or sturdy cages.

Chile de Arbol Hot Pepper

Chili de Arbol blends fiery heat with smoky flavors that really enhance Mexican cooking. Tall plants (up to 4 feet) bear heavy loads of slender, curved peppers all summer long. This heirloom pepper hails from Chihuahua, Mexico, and is the pepper seen most often in dried pepper strings (ristras) or wreaths because fruits retain their bright red color after drying. Coolapeño Heatless Jalapeño Pepper (2 Pack)

Hybrid. If you love nachos and poppers but aren’t quite so fond of the heat of traditional jalapeños, Coolapeño Heatless Jalapeño is for you! These peppers have all the delicious jalapeño flavor without the spiciness. Use them to make yummy salsa — as well as those poppers and nachos — for sensitive palates. Peppers ripen green to red, becoming sweeter as they ripen.

Cowhorn Hot Pepper

These large, thick-walled cayenne peppers are named for their shape. The fruit turns bright red when mature and are quite hot. The wrinkled fruit are excellent for sauces and drying.

Creole Tomato

For gardeners and cooks in Louisiana, summer is not summer without Creole tomatoes. Although relatively late to ripen, those loyal to Creole tomatoes are willing to wait. Creole tomatoes can tolerate heat and humidity, ripening into a meatier-than-average tomato with outstanding flavor. Developed at LSU for warm, humid areas, the indeterminate vines delight gardeners with high yields of juicy fruit that resists cracking. Vines are vigorous, so use tall cages. Crookneck Squash

Heirloom. Easy to grow and fast to mature. This is our favorite summer squash, bearing many lemon-yellow, 6-inch fruit, with a slightly bent neck that earns it the name Crookneck. Plants are fast growing and very prolific. Harvest all summer long. Delicious steamed with nutmeg or fried in slices and sprinkled with parmesan cheese and crumbled bacon. Harvest while skins are soft. Keep plants picked so they keep producing.

Cubanelle Pepper

This yellow-green to red tapered fruit is prized for a sweet, mild flesh that is growing in popularity because of its rich flavor and pretty colors for frying and cooking. The thin-walled pepper is especially suited for quick cooking. Popular in dishes of Spanish, Italian, and Slavic descent, many cooks prefer it to bell types. In the garden, Cubanelle peppers are unique, often growing in imperfect shapes and changing color from green/yellow to shades of orange to red. Don't be surprised if the some of the peppers curl and twist a bit. No two seem to ever be alike — it's part of of their charm.

Easy Pick Gold Zucchini

Savor old-fashioned zucchini flavor with an updated style: relatively compact plants with no leaf spines and gold-skinned fruit. These summertime favorites still offer a fast-growing, abundant crop that continues non-stop until frost. Try growing them in 20-inch or larger containers. The gold color makes it tougher for fruit to hide beneath green leaves, which means you'll have fewer baseball bat-sized zucchini. For best flavor, pick squash when they're 10 inches or shorter. Use the fruit like traditional green zucchini — in salads or casseroles, oven-roasted, stir-fried, stuffed, or fried.

Fresno Chili Hot Pepper

Heirloom. Fresno chili is a jalapeño-style chili, but hotter than most jalapeños. High yields of medium-sized fruit are borne on short, upright plants. The peppers ripen from green to red. Excellent for picking, canning, sauces, and salsas. Vigorous 24 to 30 inch tall plants have dense, dark green foliage and are resistant to tobacco mosaic virus. A good pickler, the fruit is also ready to eat at a mature green stage, even before it turns red.

German Johnson Heirloom Tomato

Heirloom. For quality that has stood the test of time, German Johnson stands tall — literally. These big, pink-red tomatoes are borne on robust plants that can fill a tomato cage and drape back down again. Give them at least 3 feet between plants and then pick the flavorful sandwich-sized slicers as they ripen. The number of tomatoes may be less than other varieties, but the ones you bring to the table will be worthy of their space in the garden. In our Alabama test garden, where conditions are ideal and the season is long, we harvested an average of 40 fruits per plant. German Johnson calls North Carolina home, so it is suited to life in humidity. This one is a favorite at farmers' markets in the Carolinas in the summer when the local crops come in. Be sure to stake strongly or cage.

German Queen Heirloom Tomato (2 Pack)

Heirloom. This old-fashioned beefsteak has large, sweet fruits that are lower in acid and quite meaty, making them perfect for slicing. The indeterminate vines will grow tall and bear fruit all summer long, so be sure to stake strongly or cage. One slice makes a great sandwich filling!

Giant Marconi Pepper

Awarded All-America Selections recognition in 2001 for its adaptability, earliness, smoky-sweet flavor, and yield, this pepper is a sure winner in the garden. It is one of the biggest Italian- type sweet peppers, with a long profile and a slightly lobed end. Peppers ripen from green to red and are sweetest when red. They are great in all kinds of cooked dishes, especially grilled or roasted for sandwiches or alone. Plants grow about 2.5 feet tall and are resistant to tobacco mosaic virus and potato Y virus. Keep peppers picked and they will continue producing until frost.

Golden Jubilee Heirloom Tomato

Heirloom. First introduced in 1943 as an All-America Selection, Jubilee bears large tomatoes with very meaty, thick-walled interiors and mild flavor. The globe-shaped, golden-orange fruit is similar to Sunray. Has meaty, thick walls and few seeds. High yielding. The indeterminate vines benefit from strong staking or caging, and are widely adapted throughout the US except in northernmost portions. Resistant to alternaria stem canker (A).

Bush Goliath Tomato (2 Pack)

Goliath hybrid tomatoes have classic beefsteak shape and flavor with firm, light red fruit that have few seeds. In our Alabama test garden, where conditions are ideal and the harvest season is long, we harvest 70 or more fruit from each Goliath plant. The indeterminate vines are vigorous, so you will want to stake them or use a tall cage. Resistant to many diseases: verticillium wilt (V), fusarium races 1 ; 2 (FF), nematodes (N), and tobacco mosaic virus (T).

Gypsy Pepper

This elongated, 3-lobed beauty performs well in hot and cool regions. Great for frying or in salads. Ripens from light greenish yellow to orange to red. A sweet pepper similar to Romanian Sweet. Resistant to tobacco mosaic virus.

Heatmaster Tomato

Heatmaster holds its own in hot Southern gardens, where temperatures are frequently high. A determinate hybrid tomato, plants produce strongly oblong fruits perfect for halving or quartering into salads. Medium-size fruits typically ripen in roughly 75 days. Heatmaster performs well as a fall crop in warmer zones. Plants are resistant to alternaria stem canker (Aal), gray leaf spot (Ss), verticillium (V), fusarium (F), tomato mosaic virus (ToMV), and Southern root-knot nematode (Mi/Ma/Mj).

Homestead Heirloom Tomato

Heirloom. An old favorite dating from 1954. Developed by the University of Florida especially for hot climates and known for its reliability to set fruit at high temperatures. Produces firm, meaty tomatoes. Large vines help shade fruit to protect from sunburn, and will need to be staked or caged. Plants in our test garden, where the growing conditions are ideal, bear an average of 50 pounds of fruit over a 6 to 7 week period. Resistant to fusarium wilt (F). Only available in the following states, in limited quantities: AL, AR, FL, GA, KY, LA, MS, NC, SC, TN, TX

Jack-O-Lantern Pumpkin

Heirloom. This round to oblong pumpkin was bred for making Jack O' Lanterns, but its flesh makes delicious pies, soups, and muffins, too. It weighs an average of about 7 to 10 pounds and has a deep orange color. Vines grow long, so give it plenty of room or save space by trellising and make a sling for the heavy fruit. It has a nice thick stem that makes a good handle for the top of your Jack O' Lantern. Great source of vitamins A and C.

Juliet Roma Grape Tomato

Slightly larger than the well-known Santa grape tomato, Juliet bears delicious, sweet fruit on indeterminate vines. Some gardeners refer to it as a mini Roma because of the shape. The wonderfully sweet fruit are crack resistant and remain in good condition on the vine longer than most cherry tomatoes. The fruit are as soft and juicy as cherry tomatoes, they hold up well in salads, even leftovers, and they have a longer shelf life so you can keep them on hand without picking every day. The vigorous vines set lots of fruit on long trusses and keep setting fruit throughout the summer. Quite heat tolerant. Vines are long and vigorous, so give the plant room to tumble over its cage. One of the longest-lasting tomatoes in the garden. Hybrid. Resistant to early blight (AB). Tolerant to late blight (LB).

Jet Star Tomato

Heavy yields of firm, meaty, low-acid tomatoes are crack-resistant and especially popular in the northern US since its introduction in 1969. The vines are indeterminate but fairly compact. Plants in our Alabama test garden, where conditions are excellent and the harvest season is long, yield more than 100 tomatoes each over a period of couple of months. Resistant to verticillium wilt (V) and fusarium wilt (F).

Lemon Boy Yellow Tomato

Lemon Boy hybrid is an eye-catching tomato with wonderful color and flavor. The deep globe fruit is slightly tangy, but also sweet and mild, meaty, and smooth — perfect for slicing. Adds visual interest to the garden! Vines grow rather tall, so be sure to stake or cage the plant. The highly adaptable indeterminate vines are resistant to verticillium wilt (V), fusarium wilt (F), nematodes (N), alternaria stem canker (A), and gray leaf spot (St).

Mammoth Jalapeño Hot Pepper

A giant jalapeño, this one will make whopper poppers. Peppers have a smooth skin and thick flesh, which makes them easier to stuff. Or, use them in salsa, dips, or other recipes as you would normal-sized jalapeños. Plants are resistant to tobacco mosaic virus and potato virus Y.

Marion Heirloom Tomato

Heirloom. Developed by the USDA vegetable station in Charleston, South Carolina in 1960, Marion is open-pollinated and well adapted to the South. A Rutgers type, but earlier and more disease-resistant. Indeterminate vines bear smooth, deep-globed, and crack resistant fruit all season. High yielding and vigorous, so be sure to stake or cage. A great slicing tomato. Resistant to fusarium wilt (F) and gray leaf spot (St). Only available in the following state, in limited quantity: MS

Mexibell Pepper

This unique hybrid pepper combines the characteristics of bell and hot peppers to produce a bell with a kick. Mexibell bears large, flat, wide, bell-shaped peppers that mature from green to red. Remove the seed core and ribs for milder taste. An All America winner, it grows well throughout the country. It will not cause nearby bell peppers to produce hot fruits, but could cross-pollinate with them and produce seeds that would affect next year's crop if you save seed.

Mexican Grey Zucchini

For a beautiful, delicious, easy-to-harvest zucchini, add Mexican Grey to your garden. Its lovely green fruit with grey speckles grows on an open plant habit, making harvest a breeze. Mr. Stripey Heirloom Tomato

Heirloom. These huge, beefsteak-type red-and yellow fruits with a high sugar content are delicious and pretty to slice because of the bi-coloring. Although the variety is called Mr. Stripey, don't expect perfect stripes. This is an heirloom and no two tomatoes are ever the same. The background color of the tomato is yellow to light orange, and the red often appears in little spots that align themselves in stripes radiating from the stem end of the fruit. Indeterminate vines produce through the season; they are vigorous, so use tall cages. Popular in the mid-South and beyond. Resistant to late blight (LB).

New Mexico 6-4L Pepper

Heirloom. This sturdy New Mexican pepper produces long, smooth, pendant fruits with a mildly hot flavor. This is the most popular chile commercially grown in New Mexico for drying (poblano peppers) and other uses; in New Mexico chile peppers are a food, not a spice. It is adaptable to other warm regions but loves the hot days and cool nights of the Southwest. Plants are vigorous and compact with heavy foliage to prevent sunscald. Pods ripen from green to red. New Mexico Big Jim Pepper

Introduced in 1975 by New Mexico State University, this cross between a Peruvian chile and various types from New Mexico produces high yields of bright green, mildly hot fruit that mature to red. It is popular because of the very long, tasty, 10- to 12-inch pods. An obvious choice for chiles rellenos, Big Jim may vary some in pungency from plant to plant.

Orange Butch T Hot Pepper (2 Pack)

If you like your peppers insanely hot, this one’s for you. Orange Butch T creates a culinary solar flare—so beware! Originating from the 2011 to 2013 Guinness World Record-holder red Butch T hot pepper, Orange Butch T produces the same mega-heat and fruity flavor but in a pretty orange package. The fruit’s scorpion-like stinger provides fair warning: This pepper has an element of danger. Extreme eaters love it for the sweet flavor that’s quickly replaced by a fiery burn. Be careful eating it fresh—it’s best used to flavor hot sauces, chili jams, and Caribbean dishes. The plant reaches 36 inches tall and grows beautifully in garden beds or containers. Adding a cage to your pepper plant helps support stems when heavy with fruit. Hybrid. Place in full sun and feed regularly. Scoville heat units: 800,000 to 1,463,700. Wear gloves and protect eTrue when handling fruit. Matures in 90 to 120 days.

Orange Bell Pepper

A very sweet hybrid, this beauty ripens from green to a beautiful deep, tangerine orange. Big blocky fruits with thick walls are a great source of antioxidants! The sweetest of the colored peppers. Try it in salsa, salads, or cooking. Plants are resistant to tobacco mosaic virus.

Park's Whopper Improved Tomato

If the classic Park's Whopper could be improved, this tomato does it with greater disease resistance, higher yield, and a longer growing season. Big, juicy, meaty sandwich-sized tomatoes appear early on indeterminate vines that continue until frost. Plants in our Alabama test garden, where conditions are ideal and the harvest lasts two months, bear 60 to 80 pounds of tomatoes. These vines are vigorous, so be sure to stake or cage well. Resistant to verticillium wilt (V), fusarium wilt races 1 and 2 (F), nematodes (N), and tobacco mosaic virus (T).

Patio Tomato

Patio hybrid is excellent for containers and small gardens, bearing tasty 3 to 4 oz tomatoes on strong, compact plants that grow only 2 feet tall. The stout stems generally do not need much staking at first, but it won't hurt to have stake or small cage to keep them upright in wind and rain, especially when loaded with fruit. This little plant is surprisingly productive. In our Alabama test garden, where growing conditions are very good, it yields 50 or more tomatoes per plant over an 8-week harvest period. Perfect for containers. Patio is resistant to fusarium wilt (F), alternaria stem canker (A), and gray leaf spot (St). Widely adapted throughout the US.

Organic Zucchini

This disease-resistant variety produces early and often. Plants yield lots of medium green fruit with lighter-colored flecks. Plants grow well in many areas of the country, and will produce throughout the season if fruit is harvested regularly. Pick when fruit is between 7 and 8 Inches Long. Intermediate resistance to powdery mildew, cucumber mosaic virus, zucchini yellow mosaic virus, and watermelon mosaic virus. This variety only available during peak planting season in Arizona, California, New Jersey, Oregon, Virginia, and Washington. Organic varieties are only available at retailers.

Pink Brandywine Heirloom Tomato

Heirloom. This popular beefsteak-sized, Amish tomato produces rosy pink fruits loaded with an old-fashioned tomato taste that has been prized for decades. It is considered one of the benchmarks for intense tomato flavor. The indeterminate vines are vigorous, so use tall cages. Vines yield tomatoes that ripen gradually until frost. Plants have "potato leaf" foliage. The tangy taste of Brandywine is a gourmet cook's delight.

Purple Bell Sweet Pepper

These purple peppers are guaranteed to spark conversation in the garden and on a dinner plate. Colored a rich, deep purple, they have terrific sweet bell flavor to go with their good looks. Peppers start green, shift to white, and then develop purple stripes that eventually cover the whole fruit. The purple skin contrasts beautifully with lime green flesh. It'™s a stunning combination that really dresses up fresh veggie trays, sandwiches, salads, and other dishes.This pepper tolerates high heat and humidity and thrives in Southern gardens. Red Ghost Super Hot Pepper (2 Pack)

You’ve probably heard of the ghost pepper, as it has made its name as one of the hottest peppers in the world. Fruits ripen from green to bright red, and have thin, wrinkled skins. This is a slow growing plant, but it can sometimes reach up to 4 feet tall. Handle these fiery chili peppers with caution: Wear gloves and long sleeves when harvesting, and don’t let cut peppers—or anything made with them—touch your skin. (Goggles are a good idea, too.) Remember, a very little goes an extremely long way with this pepper. Sandia Hot Pepper

Heirloom. Grow Sandia when you want a pepper that offers mild heat and versatility in use. This chile-style pepper has medium-thick walls that add a nice crunch to salsa. A favorite for roasting, the peppers are also often dried to create decorative strings, or ristras. Introduced by New Mexico State University in 1956, Sandia plants bear heavy yields of green peppers that ripen to red. Heat increases as fruits redden.
